										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The problem of <a href="https://www.tempco.it/blog/en/7618/anti-legionnaires-equipments-in-evaporative-towers/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Legionella</strong></a> has sadly returned to the forefront in the final weeks of 2025 in Italy, so we believe it&#8217;s important to take an opportunity to revisit the topic of <a href="https://www.tempco.it/blog/en/6496/legionella-risk-avoiding-and-prevention/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Legionella prevention and control</strong></a>, which, in terms of thermal management, is closely related to systems using <a href="https://en.tempco.it/solutions-en/cooling-towers/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>evaporative cooling towers</strong></a>. These cooling systems are equipped with a series of measures to prevent Legionella, such as <strong>self-draining tanks</strong> to prevent water stagnation, in addition to water treatment systems with <strong>additives that reduce algae and bacteria</strong>.</p>
<p>The Italian regulatory landscape on this topic has undergone a significant transformation in 2025: <strong>Legislative Decree 102/2025</strong>, which came into force on July 19, 2025, made mandatory certain Guidelines drawn up by the Ministry of Health in May 2015. The new obligations for prevention and control established in the Legionella Decree 2025 include:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Mandatory monitoring activities</strong>. Activities are now classified according to a Priority code. Water monitoring is now mandatory in facilities beyond the previous regulations, such as hotels, sports centers, and restaurants.</li>
<li>Preparation of the <strong>Water Safety Plan</strong> (PSA). The Water Safety Plan (PSA) is a mandatory risk assessment and management model for managers of internal building water systems.</li>
<li>Appointment of the <strong>Internal Water Distribution Manager</strong> (GIDI). For Priority facilities, the role of the Internal Water Distribution Manager (GIDI) has been introduced. The GIDI is responsible for the building&#8217;s internal drinking water system and must be appointed. He or she is responsible for verifying that analyses and the PSA are performed.</li>
</ul>
<p>Finally, <strong>penalties have also been increased</strong>, with fines of up to 30.000 euro for failure in compliance with monitoring parameters.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Recently, we supplied a series of <strong>open circuit <a href="https://en.tempco.it/solutions-en/cooling-towers/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">evaporative towers</a></strong> for the new Italian green production site of an <strong>important pharmaceutical company</strong>. The towers as a whole have a <strong>power capacity of approximately 10 MW</strong> serving the company&#8217;s <strong>cooling system</strong> of the production plant.</p>
<p>The <a href="https://www.tempco.it/blog/en/7169/water-cooling-essentials-in-a-cooling-tower/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">evaporative towers</a> built by Tempco are in <strong>modular package type</strong>, and were supplied in a special version, with collection tanks designed to be <strong>installed at high altitude with gravity drains</strong> to collect the cooled water in the existing reinforced concrete tanks, with the aim to contain the costs of civil works and reduce the commissioning times of the new plant.</p>
<p>The supply of the cooling towers was complete with <strong>control panels</strong>, equipped with <strong><a href="https://www.tempco.it/blog/en/3719/energy-saving-with-ec-drives-and-inverters-on-heat-management-machines/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">inverters</a> for the energy management of the fans</strong>, allowing a significant energy saving thanks to a smart and effective use of power.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The <strong>proper management of cooling</strong> tasks is a delicate and very important operation in the <strong>production of expanded polystyrene</strong>. In fact, this kind of application in the past used to be achieved employing <a href="https://en.tempco.it/solutions-en/cooling-towers/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>cooling towers</strong></a>, but nowadays the evolution of technologies allows to accept <strong>cooling temperatures at higher levels</strong>.</p>
<p>This development therefore allows the use of <strong>air-cooled condensers</strong>, the classic <a href="https://en.tempco.it/solutions-en/industrial-coolers-electroradiators/t-fin-idry/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>dry-coolers</strong></a>, adopting a solution that also offers the advantage of <strong>eliminating the <a href="https://www.tempco.it/blog/en/7169/water-cooling-essentials-in-a-cooling-tower/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">water consumption</a></strong> involved with evaporative towers and ensuring a much <strong>simpler overall maintenance of the plant</strong>. In fact, there is no longer the risk of <a href="https://www.tempco.it/blog/en/6466/legionella-and-cooling-towers-maintenance/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">legionella</a> implications due a poor water management or <a href="https://www.tempco.it/blog/en/7002/fouling-factor-in-heat-exchangers/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>scaling</strong></a> due to the presence of carbonates.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In addition to the <a href="https://www.tempco.it/blog/en/8801/five-fingers-rule-and-heat-exchangers/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Five fingers rule</a>, referring to the five parameters required for the correct sizing of a <a href="https://en.tempco.it/solutions-en/heat-exchangers/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>heat exchanger</strong></a>, there is also a <strong>Four fingers rule</strong>, which is employed when <strong>designing a thermal machine</strong>.</p>
<p>A thermal machine that can be a <a href="https://en.tempco.it/solutions-en/industrial-coolers-electroradiators/t-fin-idry/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>dry cooler</strong></a>, or a <a href="https://en.tempco.it/solutions-en/chillers/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>refrigerating group</strong></a>, or a <a href="https://en.tempco.it/solutions-en/cooling-towers/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>cooling tower</strong></a>. In this case, there are indeed four parameters required for the proper sizing of the machinery: the kind of <strong>fluid to be cooled</strong> and its flow rate; the <strong>inlet temperature</strong>, which is the temperature of the fluid as it comes from the process; the <strong>outlet temperature</strong>, which is the temperature of the fluid required when it goes back to the process; the design <strong>ambient air temperature</strong>.</p>

And finally, in case of an evaporative tower is the <a href="https://www.tempco.it/blog/en/7169/water-cooling-essentials-in-a-cooling-tower/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>wet-bulb temperature</strong></a>, a key value for the evaporation process.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>We’re currently supplying the <strong>third line for the cooling of furnaces</strong> employed in the <a href="https://www.tempco.it/blog/en/8456/carbon-ceramic-brakes-cooling-plant-revamping/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>production of carbon ceramic brakes</strong></a>. The Tempco customer has eventually <strong>standardized both the PLC logic and the selection of all the components</strong>, with an optimization as well of the <a href="https://en.tempco.it/solutions-en/heat-exchangers/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>exchangers</strong></a>, <strong>pumps</strong>, <strong>tanks</strong>, <strong>levels</strong> and <strong>interfaces</strong> for the application.</p>
<p>The line is intended to cool the furnaces that provide the <strong>thermal treatment of the discs of carbon ceramic brakes</strong>. The Tempco solution ensures the cooling of the furnaces, because in case of an improper, or even absent cooling process, the whole brakes batch could go wasted. But also the furnaces themselves could be damaged, with obviously an even greater loss.</p>
<p>The treatment achieved within the furnaces is therefore a critical step in this kind of application, as well as the <strong>accuracy and reliability of the cooling system</strong>. In order to ensure always the maximum reliability, the cooling plant has been equipped with <strong>redundant security systems</strong>, using <a href="https://en.tempco.it/solutions-en/cooling-towers/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>tower water</strong></a> that feeds a heat exchanger and pumps providing the circulation of the water within the furnaces. With water in a closed circuit among the tower, the exchanger and the furnaces. In case of power failure, an <strong>emergency generator starts automatically</strong> with a valves circuit automatically opening, allowing mains water to flow within the plant decreasing the temperature of the furnaces, saving both the machinery and the production.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The employ of <a href="https://www.tempco.it/blog/en/7842/advantages-and-characteristics-of-monofluid-thermoregulation/"><strong>mono fluid thermoregulation</strong></a> is very much common in <a href="https://www.tempco.it/blog/en/8197/mono-fluid-thermoregulation-in-pharmaceutical-industry/">pharmaceutical</a> and <a href="https://www.tempco.it/blog/en/7652/special-thermoregulation-units-in-chemical-refining/">chemical industries</a> production processes, used for the <strong><a href="https://www.tempco.it/blog/en/7926/revamping-in-temperature-regulation-of-life-science-reactors/">temperature regulation of reactors</a></strong>. Many and diverse are the applications, as these can involve small reactors used in laboratories or big <a href="https://www.tempco.it/blog/en/8254/thermostatation-of-reactors-in-apis-production/">reactors for the production of APIs</a>, but also mixers employed for the mixing of chemical matters or cosmetics.</p>
<p>The basic concept of all these applications remains anyway the same, being it to maintain these systems at a certain temperature to prepare the product inside them thanks to a series of <strong>increasing or descending ramps of temperatures</strong>, with <strong>controlled cycles of heating and cooling</strong>.</p>
<p><strong>Reactors are usually jacketed</strong>, and a fluid can flow inside the jackets, hot or cold, in order to heat or cool the product on the inside. A simple primary solution is to <strong>let different fluids flow within the jacket</strong>, for example steam and cold water, to achieve the temperature regulation. But during the switch between the fluids, the jacket must be completely emptied, avoiding potential contaminations of the fluids, and the new fluid must be pumped to completely flow inside the reactor, involving additional technical times.</p>
<p>The best solution is therefore to employ mono fluid thermoregulation, using a <strong>unique fluid that continuously flows inside the jacket</strong> that step by step gets thermoregulated at the right temperature required to heat or cool the product, by means of <a href="https://en.tempco.it/solutions-en/heat-exchangers/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>heat exchangers</strong></a> and <strong>switching valves</strong>. Based on a set-point configured by the production of the customer on a <strong>PLC</strong>, which is connected with the thermogulating unit, valves on the steam exchanger are opened in order to achieve heating, or otherwise commanding the valves on the cold water to cool the fluid that keeps on circulating.</p>

<p>There are clearly several and diverse systems, for example thermoregulating units with <a href="https://www.tempco.it/blog/en/8401/efficiency-and-energy-saving-with-scr-relays-in-electrical-heating/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>electrical heating section</strong></a> and cooling with water, or multiple stage thermoregulating units, steam heating or <a href="https://en.tempco.it/solutions-en/cooling-towers/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>cooling with tower water</strong></a> or icy cold water, if very low temperatures must be reached. In fact, these are <strong>extremely customized thermoregulating units</strong>, even considering the fact they often operate in safe or <a href="https://www.tempco.it/blog/en/6839/atex-thermoregulation-in-chemical-production/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Atex environments</strong></a>, or they are intended for installation within the <strong>United States</strong>, requiring <strong><a href="https://www.tempco.it/blog/en/8335/thermoregulating-units-for-reactors-in-the-usa/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">UL certification</a></strong>, or in the <strong>Russian market</strong>, needing to be compliant with <a href="https://www.tempco.it/blog/en/7635/tempco-enters-the-russian-market-with-eac-certification/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>EAC regulations</strong></a>.</p>
<p>But after all the working principle remains the same, a unique fluid that keeps on circulating on the reactor side, getting heated or cooled by utility fluids that are fed into the <a href="https://en.tempco.it/solutions-en/thermo-regulating-units/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>thermoregulation unit</strong></a>. The advantages of mono fluid thermoregulation is therefore to have a constant circulation of the fluid, no contamination of working thermal fluids, and finally the possibility to <strong>achieve a wide thermoregulation range</strong>. With a very precise regulation of temperature and a <strong>fine control of the set-points</strong>, with strict tolerances, thanks to the use of <strong>PID systems</strong>, switching valves and highly accurate regulation systems.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Back in 2011, Tempco installed a <strong>cooling plant</strong> for an important <strong>Italian <a href="https://www.tempco.it/blog/en/3663/high-temperature-diathermic-oil-thermoregulation-units/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">foundry</a></strong>. The cooling plant provides in fact the cooling of several equipments, including <strong>induction furnaces</strong>, <strong>die casting machines</strong> for the foundry of metallic parts with steel dies, <strong>moulds cooling tanks</strong> and cooling tanks for the manufactured parts.</p>
<p>Overall, the cooling plants is composed by:</p>

<p>After more than 10 years of operations, the customer needs to <strong>increase the production capacity of the plant</strong>. The intervention involved to <strong>double the cooling tower</strong> and the related water distribution system, due to the fact that the foundry will install <strong>new additional induction furnaces</strong> and also because the cooling system will have to serve also a new part of the plant aiming for the <strong>cooling of die casting machines</strong>.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>When I try to explain how <a href="https://en.tempco.it/solutions-en/cooling-towers/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>evaporative towers</strong></a> work, I often find myself speaking about that particular effect called <strong>Wind chill</strong>, also useful to show the advantages of cooling towers compared to indirect <a href="https://en.tempco.it/solutions-en/heat-exchangers/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>heat exchangers</strong></a>.</p>
<p>The wind chill, or <strong>cooling effect caused by the wind</strong>, refers to that sensation of chilling coming out from a swim in the sea in the presence of wind. This sudden and intense sensation of cold is caused by the evaporation of water over our body, and this is due to the effect of <strong>evaporation of water on our skin that absorbs calories</strong>, energy.</p>
<p>This is exactly the same effect that happens in <a href="https://www.tempco.it/blog/en/7542/adiabatic-dry-cooling-in-steel-wire-drawing/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>adiabatic coolers</strong></a> and evaporative towers, that allows to cool water at a temperature level lower than the temperature of ambient air. In fact, speaking about evaporative towers with customers, we always ask them the value of <strong>design <a href="https://www.tempco.it/blog/en/6339/adiabatic-free-cooling-at-plast-2018/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wet bulb temperature</a></strong>, which is essential aimed to design and calculate the cooling tower.</p>
<p>Watching US’ <a href="https://www.tempco.it/blog/161/scelta-della-temperatura-del-bulbo-umido-in-una-torre-evaporativa/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>standard ASHRAE tables</strong></a>, or also other climatic tables, there are always average dry bulb temperatures indicated referred to different geographical areas, both during the winter and summer season. These tables contain as well a column with the respective average values of wet bulb temperature.</p>

<p>Making it simple, wet bulb temperature is the temperature that is obtained wrapping the sensor, or bulb, of a common outdoor thermometer with a slightly humid rag. Suddenly it will be possible to see the temperature’s level going down, and this is the wet bulb temperature, that is the temperature of the bulb humidified, which is <strong>lower than ambient external air temperature</strong>. This is as well the reference temperature employed for the design of cooling towers, because <strong>that’s the lowest temperature that can be achieved</strong>, obtaining water coming out of the tower at a lower temperature. It happens taking advantage of the <strong>latent heat of vaporization</strong>, which is the energy that gets dissipated by water to evaporate, generating a decrease of the temperature of the water that gets cooled.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The growing attention on <a href="https://www.tempco.it/blog/en/8303/new-tempco-infographics-renewables-for-energy-engineering" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>energy saving and efficiency</strong></a> within the industry, even for <strong>cooling applications</strong>, as we have seen already involves the possibility to implement <strong>electronic control motors</strong> on machinery such as <strong><a href="https://en.tempco.it/solutions-en/chillers/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">chillers</a></strong> and <a href="https://en.tempco.it/solutions-en/cooling-towers/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>evaporative towers</strong></a>. <a href="https://www.tempco.it/blog/en/7214/energy-saving-ec-motors-and-cooling/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>EC motors</strong></a> allow a variable speed control over equipments such as fans, based on the real cooling need of the production process. Even if designed and sized upon the maximum cooling capacity requested, indeed, cooling systems don’t always have to function at maximum capacity, requiring a <strong>lower cooling effect</strong> during many production steps.</p>
<p>In this context, the trend towards a more <strong>smart energy consumption in cooling plants</strong> leads to a growing employ of EC motors. This kind of motors have in particular to ensure the <strong>correct definition of the power absorbed</strong> at various rotation speed levels possible, as well as the evaluation of potential energy savings that can be achieved. The engineering of EC motors therefore requires accurate tests during the design step, in addition to the check of their effective performances: at this purpose, <a href="https://www.tempco.it/blog/en/6927/thermoregulation-for-electric-vehicles-test-benches/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>special test benches</strong></a> with a high sophistication level are employed. These test benches require at their turn an <strong>extremely accurate control of temperature and flow rate</strong> during the cooling/thermoregulation task, in order to guarantee the precision of the test process of EC motors.</p>

<p>The temperature range required in this kind of test benches is between <strong>0° C and +90° C</strong>, involving two circuits. The first one is easier to realize, aimed to <strong><a href="https://www.tempco.it/blog/en/4816/carbon-ceramic-brake-discs/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">brakes</a> cooling</strong>, while the second one is quite more sophisticated, aimed to the <strong>direct cooling/thermoregulation of motors</strong>, that undergo strict tests and thermal stresses.</p>
<p>The <strong>test bench for EC motors</strong> is then served by an <strong>air condensed <a href="https://www.tempco.it/blog/en/8367/energy-saving-with-inverters-in-refrigerating-groups/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">chiller</a></strong>. The chiller provides refrigerated water for a <strong>thermoregulating unit</strong>, serving the plant water at the required temperature for each of the different steps of the testing. A series of equipments then provide water at the correct flow rate and temperature level as needed by the various components being tested. Finally, the overall system is equipped with instruments with an interface for <strong>remote control and monitoring</strong> of the plant.</p>
