Back to basics of Heat Exchangers

We often discuss about heat exchangers, thermal energy recovery, working fluids, power generation and industrial processes in our Tempcoblog, expecting that many terms and concepts are commonly renowned for those who stop by and read our articles.

Going back to basics is then a good thing, reflecting on some essential concept, questioning and going in depth with something we often consider too much to go without saying. That being said both for first readers of our Tempco Blog on thermal energy solutions and for more frequent and returning readers of our pages.

First, let’s start focusing on what is a Heat Exchanger: it’s a machinery employed to remove and transfer thermal energy, without producing it nor requiring any further primary energy consumption. Heat exchangers exist in a wide range of types and sizes, plate heat exchangers and shell and tube heat exchangers, engineered using conductive metals able to transfer heat between two fluids, flowing in contact with the opposite metallic surfaces, also avoiding their mixing.

Small heat exchangers or bigger ones are built and engineered in order to satisfy a wide range of needs in industrial processes, in any kind of sector and application field. According to working conditions and the kind of fluids employed, several solutions are possible, choosing different materials, for example providing resistance to corrosive fluids, in case of heat exchangers for marine applications with sea water, or also fluids employed in chemical industry, oil & gas, but also in food & beverages and pharma.

Heat transfer is then a physical process that happens between two fluids, divided by the metallic surfaces of the heat exchanger, and the efficiency of this process is in direct proportion with some characteristics of the two fluids involved: density, specific heat, thermal conductivity and dynamic viscosity.

Density – also volumetric mass density, is the mass of a substance, expressed in kg, contained in a volume of 1m cubic

Specific Heat – is the amount of heat needed to increase the temperature of a mass of 1 kg of a fluid by 1°C

Thermal Conductivity – expresses the attitude of a fluid on transferring heat, and is obtained as a ratio between heat flow and the temperature variation caused by the heat flow itself

Dynamic Viscosity – represents fluid’s resistance to flow

Referring to this last parameter, Tempco designs and realizes plates for heat exchangers with special patterns, intended to better allow and increase turbulence and speed flowing in fluids: indeed, higher the fluid’s flow speed, greater will be the heat transfer and efficiency of the heat exchanger.

Skid units, custom integrated thermoregulation

Skid thermoregulation units with plc control, electric pumps and electronic thermoregulators: lately Tempco is developing a complete range of box framed thermal machines, intended to respond any thermostatation need in industrial processes of our customers.
These thermal units involve integrated solutions or package skid units for thermoregulation, with a strong industrial design and are largely appreciated for their extremely custom engineering, with a very special attention for components selection and details. The units are enhanced with:
– Stainless steel pipings

– Pickling treated weldings

– First quality modulating control valves

– Steel sheet frame box coated with oven cured polyurethane cycle

– Centrifugal electric pumps with special mechanical seal for high temperatures

– Electric pumps with magnetic drive for diathermic fluids at 300 °C

– Monitoring and safety equipments

– Digital Electronic thermoregulator with smart interface

These customized and special thermoregulation units are engineered in order to allow industries to commit thermoregulation needs for their production processes to systems and devices that ensure the right heating, thermoregulation and cooling cycles, with maximum efficiency and the highest precision in temperature’s setting and regulation.

The units can be enhanced with multiple heat exchangers, working with fluids at different temperatures, depending on the temperature’s level needed, cooling or heating production fluids, pumped in the thermoregulation units making the fluids always available at the most suitable temperature for production purposes. Plc managing systems can control the whole process, automatically monitoring the fluid’s flowing and transition using a sophisticated system of electric actuated valves.

Tempco produces this kind of thermoregulation units as largely tested modules, also supplied complete with proper certifications requested by the peculiar applications environment, such as ATEX construction for chemical and pharmaceutical.

Among advantages reached with this thermoregulation skid units are:

– working fluids in separated circuits avoiding mixing
– high thermal transfer efficiency
– heating/cooling/thermoregulating cycles automation
– highly precise temperature’s regulation
– setting of different temperatures series

Heat exchangers: plates vs shell and tube

Choosing a heat exchanger, the first and main question is: what kind of heat exchanger?
This is a topic already discussed here (mostly in the italian section, so that it represents a new contribution here), but never enough being said. Two different alternatives are indeed possible, opting for a shell and tube type or choosing a plate heat exchanger.

The progress of technology construction today allows to go for plate heat exchangers for the majority of applications, as the increasing and yet big amount of applications developed and engineered in Tempco demonstrates, in all kind of industrial sectors. In fact, if shell and tube type was almost a forced way in the past, in case of extreme working conditions with very high pressure and temperature values, new technological and engineering processes expanded plate heat exchangers potential, making them able to cover and satisfy a greater and wider range of industrial processes.

Brazed heat exchangers and all welded plate heat exchangers today allow to employ plate heat exchangers with temperatures up to 900°C, and pressures up to 100 bars. An increased range that covers almost any kind of requirement, with just a few exceptions, as for fumes recovery in refineries, or low pressure air, due to load loss and speed flow, still forcing to employ shell and tube type.

In any other kind of cooling and heating application, today plate heat exchangers are the best choice, no doubt about it, exploiting all the many advantages offered:

– higher thermal transfer efficiency
– extreme flexibility
– compact dimensions, a crucial asset in many industrial sectors
– increasing thermal transfer capacity just adding new plates
– easy maintenance and loss check and repair
– connections fixed, even in case of retrofit with a superior capacity plate heat exchanger, connections interface remains the same

The great flexibility is indeed a very important benefit offered by plate heat exchangers, representing a crucial competitiveness force allowing greater ROI: being able to increase or decrease the thermal transfer capacity simply adding or removing plates, increasing or reducing thermal transfer surface, without any intervention on piping and maintaining connections exactly the same, allows to adjust thermal capacity to the real needs and production volumes.

That means, as we use to underline, that plate heat exchangers fulfill the concept of ‘standard custom flexibility’, a leading philosophy for Tempco, allowing to develop a greater and increasing number of applications, for industrial process thermal regulation needs in a more and more greater range of industrial sectors.

Marine ship heaters

Brazed plate heat exchangers are suitable for new and challenging installations.

On marine ship you can use them as steam heaters on many different applications.

Application is easy and useful on industrial processes, you can heat up water or oil with steam (or hot oil).

Our technical department push up limits and design a new special connection in order to make suitable brazed plate heat exchangers with ship environment.

Carbon-ceramic brake discs

High-performance sports cars are increasingly being fitted with carbon-ceramic brake discs.

You can take a look, on 24 Hours of Le Mans, looking for the braking closed to the most challenging turn.

These brake discs are extremely heat resistant and much more efficient as a result, even in the case of braking on the very limit of grip, which can occur during sporting events or intensive use.

You may be wondering what these brakes have to do with our cooling and thermostation technologies and our heat exchangers.
