{"id":9432,"date":"2023-06-09T12:32:15","date_gmt":"2023-06-09T10:32:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tempco.it\/blog\/?p=9432"},"modified":"2024-01-17T16:30:12","modified_gmt":"2024-01-17T15:30:12","slug":"e-fuels-sustainable-alternative-for-endothermic-engines-in-automotive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tempco.it\/blog\/en\/9432\/e-fuels-sustainable-alternative-for-endothermic-engines-in-automotive\/","title":{"rendered":"E-fuels, sustainable alternative for endothermic engines in automotive"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Regulations and policy makers are concentrating the development of the <strong>automotive of the future<\/strong> towards <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tempco.it\/blog\/en\/6927\/thermoregulation-for-electric-vehicles-test-benches\/\"><strong>electric motors<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tempco.it\/blog\/en\/9340\/from-water-to-energy-baglietto-unfolds-the-future-of-zero-emission-yachting\/\"><strong>electrification<\/strong><\/a>, but there is another viable alternative solution that would allow to <strong>maintain endothermic engines in traditional vehicles<\/strong>: these are the <strong>e-fuels<\/strong>, a class of alternative <strong>synthetic fuels ensuring carbon neutrality<\/strong>. First of all, e-fuels, also known as <strong>electrofuels<\/strong>, are not biofuels, which are obtained from used oils, wastes and biomasses.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>synthetic fuels<\/strong>, or e-fuels, are obtained by <strong>extracting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tempco.it\/blog\/en\/9029\/hydrogen-fuel-cells-cooling-applications\/\">hydrogen<\/a> using electrolysis<\/strong> leveraging <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tempco.it\/blog\/en\/8999\/sustainability-and-heat-exchangers-a-whole-month-dedicated-to-renewables\/\">renewable energy<\/a><\/strong>, therefore through a completely sustainable production process. Hydrogen is then combined with CO2 creating a liquid energy vector. <strong>E-fuels are said to be decarbonized<\/strong> because during combustion they produce an amount of CO2 that equals the same amount that gets absorbed while producing them, achieving a <strong>circular process at zero impact<\/strong> on the environment, and in fact more sustainable than the production of batteries for electric vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>The most common one is the <strong>synthetic fuel<\/strong>, or also synfuel, a mixture of hydrogen and CO2 which is also the basic component of many types of e-fuels. It can power traditional endothermic engines with no emission of sulphur dioxide nor other harmful substances.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9429\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tempco.it\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Tempco-efuels-alternativa-carburanti-sostenibili-motore-endotermico-automotive.jpg\" alt=\"Tempco e-fuels alternativa carburanti sostenibili motore endotermico automotive\" width=\"650\" height=\"434\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tempco.it\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Tempco-efuels-alternativa-carburanti-sostenibili-motore-endotermico-automotive.jpg 964w, https:\/\/www.tempco.it\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Tempco-efuels-alternativa-carburanti-sostenibili-motore-endotermico-automotive-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.tempco.it\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Tempco-efuels-alternativa-carburanti-sostenibili-motore-endotermico-automotive-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Power to liquids technology is also employed to produce <strong>synthetic diesel fuel<\/strong>, or <strong>e-diesel,<\/strong> created from carbon dioxide, water and electricity coming from renewable sources, obtaining a liquid energy carrier called blue crude, which is then refined to generate e-diesel. There are also <strong>synthetic kerosene<\/strong>, which is already employed in the aviation sector, and <strong>synthetic methane<\/strong>, the most simple of all the e-fuels due to the fact that this is not oil-based, its production could be more easier and cheap not requiring refining.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually let\u2019s not forget hydrogen, <strong>green hydrogen<\/strong> obtained through electrolysis of water, and <strong>blue hydrogen<\/strong>, obtained by splitting natural gas into hydrogen and CO2, in fact using a reverse production process compared to e-fuels production.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s then very important to underline once again that <strong>e-fuels are compatible with traditional endothermic engines<\/strong>, thus not requiring the shift to electric powertrain. More over, e-fuels are also <strong>compatible with existing distribution plants<\/strong> and fuel stations already employed for traditional vehicles. Unfortunately, at the moment the production of these alternative sustainable fuels is <strong>still very expensive<\/strong>, but in the next years, with a larger adoption, the prices could lower reaching the same cost of actual traditional fuels.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.efuel-alliance.eu\/de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"broken_link\"><strong>eFuel Alliance<\/strong><\/a> says that <strong>industrial-scale e-fuels production should start in 2025<\/strong>, with a cost that could approximately be about 1.60 euro\/l or slightly more.
