{"id":9418,"date":"2023-05-26T12:03:20","date_gmt":"2023-05-26T10:03:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tempco.it\/blog\/?p=9418"},"modified":"2023-05-26T12:04:49","modified_gmt":"2023-05-26T10:04:49","slug":"carbon-fiber-and-temperature-control-in-dallara-supercars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tempco.it\/blog\/en\/9418\/carbon-fiber-and-temperature-control-in-dallara-supercars\/","title":{"rendered":"Carbon fiber and temperature control in Dallara supercars"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you are a passionate of <strong>racing and supercars<\/strong>, in Varano de\u2019 Melegari, a small Italian town in the province of Parma, at the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallara.it\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dallara<\/a> Academy<\/strong> you can visit the exposition of many of supercar models created and produced by the historical Italian automotive manufacturer along the years.<\/p>\n<p>If you are lucky enough to have a <strong>guided tour of the manufacturing site<\/strong>, you will also be allowed to visit the area dedicated to the <strong>modeling of prototypes<\/strong>, the <strong>wind tunnel<\/strong> and the section where components and parts are produced using additive manufacturing with <strong>stereolithography 3D printing<\/strong> technology. Very interesting, due to the delicate controlled temperature processes involved, is then the section dedicated to the production of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tempco.it\/blog\/en\/7906\/grosjean-crash-when-temperature-control-makes-the-safety\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>carbon fiber components<\/strong><\/a>, <strong>automotive parts<\/strong> and <strong>car bodies<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Carbon fiber is a <strong>ultra light and highly resistant<\/strong> material, and Dallara realized its <strong>first carbon fiber monocoque in 1985<\/strong>. Today, the components are created using <strong>carbon fiber sheets pre-impregnated<\/strong> with a special resin that polymerizes at ambient temperature, and therefore stored at low and controlled temperatures between -18 and -20\u00b0 C.<\/p>\n<p>Multiple carbon fiber sheets are <strong>layered in a mould<\/strong>, depending on the thickness required of the component, and moulds are then closed and pressed in vacuum, in order to eliminare any possible air bubble. The carbon fiber is then <strong>heated in furnaces at temperatures between 100\u00b0 and 150\u00b0 C<\/strong>, under pressure. The temperature levels involved in the heating process of carbon fiber components are not really high, because as said above the material already starts its polymerization phase at ambient temperature.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9411\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tempco.it\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Dallara-supercar-fibra-di-carbonio.jpg\" alt=\"Dallara supercar fibra di carbonio\" width=\"551\" height=\"389\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tempco.it\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Dallara-supercar-fibra-di-carbonio.jpg 907w, https:\/\/www.tempco.it\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Dallara-supercar-fibra-di-carbonio-300x212.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.tempco.it\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Dallara-supercar-fibra-di-carbonio-768x542.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 551px) 100vw, 551px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Carbon fiber parts and components are then <strong>cooled at accurately controlled temperatures<\/strong> and times. Finally, the components are <strong>finished and quality checked<\/strong>, essential steps because once the carbon fiber is processed, it\u2019s not possible to reuse it nor invert the process.
