{"id":8367,"date":"2021-11-19T13:26:29","date_gmt":"2021-11-19T12:26:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tempco.it\/blog\/?p=8367"},"modified":"2021-11-19T13:26:29","modified_gmt":"2021-11-19T12:26:29","slug":"energy-saving-with-inverters-in-refrigerating-groups","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tempco.it\/blog\/en\/8367\/energy-saving-with-inverters-in-refrigerating-groups\/","title":{"rendered":"Energy saving with inverters in refrigerating groups"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Following a roadmap to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.tempco.it\/infographics\/engineering-green\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>renewables and energy saving<\/strong><\/a>, on the pace traced by our latest <a href=\"https:\/\/en.tempco.it\/infographics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Tempco Infographic<\/strong><\/a>, I would like to talk about how <strong>energy saving<\/strong> can be specifically applied in all of the different thermal machines. Starting with <a href=\"https:\/\/en.tempco.it\/solutions-en\/chillers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>refrigerating groups<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I remember when first attempts started on the market to employ <strong>inverters in order to adjust the speed of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tempco.it\/blog\/en\/4029\/energy-recovery-from-air-compressor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">compressors<\/a><\/strong> on refrigerating groups. Inverters are largely employed to <strong>regulate speed on electric drives<\/strong>, adjusting the power absorption based on the season conditions. It\u2019s clear indeed that during the summer season, when ambient temperature is higher, a refrigerating group needs the maximum power in order to achieve the refrigeration task required. While during the winter season it requires less amounts of power, due to a series of reasons such as the <strong>increased efficiency of the condensation system<\/strong> and the fact that water comes from the production process at lower temperatures.<\/p>\n<p>The study to implement <strong>energy saving on refrigerating groups<\/strong> aimed then at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tempco.it\/blog\/en\/7214\/energy-saving-ec-motors-and-cooling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>adjusting the speed of fans on condensers using EC motors<\/strong><\/a>, with electronic control, through inverters. This allows the regulation of the speed of fans based on ambient temperature levels.<\/p>\n<p>The same kind of adjustment was then possible on <strong>compressors<\/strong>. Let\u2019s make an example to explain why: when <strong>sizing a refrigerating group<\/strong> employed to regulate the temperature of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tempco.it\/blog\/en\/8254\/thermostatation-of-reactors-in-apis-production\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pharmaceutical reactors<\/a>, the plant must be engineered to provide the maximum capacity required to achieve the cooling task. But there will be also a series of intermediate steps not requiring the maximum <strong>design refrigerating capacity<\/strong>, but maybe only at 50% or 30.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/J1kUOTDjfA8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In the past it was used to employ <strong>multi-compressor plants<\/strong>, with step-compressors, using all of the compressors, or only 2 on 4, or one on 4 for example. The solution allowed to obtain a good energy saving, clearly <strong>using a step-approach<\/strong>. Which means, having a four-compressors plant, the possibility to have a 100% capacity, or at 75, 50, 25 or 0%.<\/p>\n<p>A further improvement was to <strong>install a collecting tank<\/strong> in order to accumulate refrigerated water to satisfy peaks and hollows on the thermal work diagram. An optimal regulation, that can be furthermore improved.<\/p>\n<p>The improvement consists in the <strong>employ of an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tempco.it\/blog\/en\/7130\/free-cooling-for-heat-dissipation-in-inverter-testing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">inverter<\/a><\/strong>, which allows to adjust the speeed of the compressor in order to have the <strong>correct amount of power at the exact right moment when it\u2019s needed<\/strong>. Which represents the very perfect condition. I remember that the first attempts to install inverters on compressors failed, because these were volumetric piston compressors that when powered by the inverter kept stuck.<\/p>\n<p>The problem has been solved with the adoption of <strong>scroll-type compressors<\/strong>, that can be used with inverters. Taking a huge step forward in <strong>energy saving applied to refrigerating groups<\/strong>.
