{"id":8178,"date":"2021-06-18T15:04:25","date_gmt":"2021-06-18T13:04:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tempco.it\/blog\/?p=8178"},"modified":"2021-06-18T15:05:01","modified_gmt":"2021-06-18T13:05:01","slug":"when-the-implementation-of-free-cooling-is-worth-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tempco.it\/blog\/en\/8178\/when-the-implementation-of-free-cooling-is-worth-it\/","title":{"rendered":"When the implementation of free cooling is worth it?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An actual trend in <strong>energy saving<\/strong> is the implementation of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.tempco.it\/solutions-en\/industrial-coolers-electroradiators\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">free cooling<\/a><\/strong> systems combined with <a href=\"https:\/\/en.tempco.it\/definitions\/thermal-machines\/chiller-or-refrigerator\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>chillers<\/strong><\/a> to achieve cooling in industrial processes.<\/p>\n<p>When a production process requires for example <strong>cold water at the temperature of 15\u00b0 C<\/strong>, its is necessary to install a chiller that allows to obtain water at these temperatures for the whole time period of the year. But during the Winter season it\u2019s possible to employ <strong>direct thermal transfer systems<\/strong> leveraging the <strong>low temperatures of external ambient air<\/strong>. These are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tempco.it\/blog\/en\/7106\/self-draining-dry-cooling-cooling-efficiency-in-every-season\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dry cooling or free cooling<\/a> systems consisting in thermal transfer arrays or huge <strong>radiators with ventilation<\/strong> that allow to cool water.<\/p>\n<p>The convenience of installing these kind of systems depends on two main factors, first of all the <strong>latitude of the installation site<\/strong> of the plant. Secondary, the <strong>temperature levels required<\/strong> by the kind of industrial process involved.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kHOFRQhQZk8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Having for example a production process that needs <strong>cooling water at the temperature of 15\u00b0 C<\/strong>, it will be necessary to have a chiller during the Summer season. But during Winter, or <strong>whenever the ambient air temperature falls down 10\u00b0 C<\/strong>, it is possible to obtain water at the temperature of 15\u00b0 C using a classic dry cooler. Achieving a <strong>significant energy saving<\/strong>: it is indeed possible to <strong>completely shut down the compressors of the chiller<\/strong>, while keeping only the energy consumption related to the <strong>pumps<\/strong> that provide the circulation of refrigerated water and the <strong>fans for ventilation<\/strong>. For a 100 kW plant, for examples, it leads to a saving of 30 kW of energy consumption related to the compressors per hour.
