The value is fundamental for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tempco.it\/blog\/en\/3402\/heat-exchanger-calculation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">calculation<\/a> of the <strong>thermal exchange surface<\/strong> of a heat exchanger.<\/p>\n<p>The LMTD is a crucial value also for the <strong>selection of the kind of heat exchanger<\/strong> most suitable for a certain application. Thermal transfer between two fluids presenting a short temperature gap is indeed very slow, while it will be much more faster and efficient in case of <strong>steam at 130\u00b0 C to heat up cold water<\/strong> to a temperature of 70\u00b0 C, for example. For the same reason, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.tempco.it\/solutions-en\/recover-thermal-energy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>heat recovery<\/strong><\/a> is much more efficient having a small quantity of water at very high temperature instead of a lot of water at a mild temperature.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"DELTA TI MEDIO LOGARITMICO\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6gX-7Uk2SAM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tempco.it\/blog\/en\/6675\/how-does-a-plate-heat-exchanger-work-tempco-video\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Plate heat exchangers<\/strong><\/a> allow to work with very <strong>narrow log mean temperature differences<\/strong>, thanks to possibility to work with countercurrent fluids and with turbulent flows, achieving high thermal exchange rates. Thermal transfer rates of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.tempco.it\/solutions-en\/heat-exchangers\/shell-and-tube-heat-exchangers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>shell and tubes exchangers<\/strong><\/a> are instead lower, thus requiring a higher LMTD. The Log mean TD is therefore even widened for air\/water or air\/steam <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tempco.it\/soluzioni\/raffreddatori-industriali-elettroradiatori\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>finned pack exchangers<\/strong><\/a>, requiring very extended thermal transfer surfaces.<\/p>\n<p>In general, the <strong>logarithmic mean temperature difference is inversely proportional to the thermal transfer surfaces<\/strong>.
