H and L plates stands for high and low efficiency, referred to the thermal exchange rate achievable. <strong>Thermal transfer efficiency<\/strong> in a plate heat exchanger is indeed a result of the turbulence rate of fluids, depending upon the kind of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tempco.it\/blog\/en\/4456\/flexible-brazed-plate-heat-exchangers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Chevron angle<\/strong><\/a> in the plates corrugation design.<\/p>\n<p>The Chevron angle in <strong>H plates<\/strong> is a dull angle, so that when overlapping the plates, rotated by 180\u00b0 on each other, there will be many contact points leading to a very <strong>high thermal transfer rate<\/strong>. By the way, pressure drop will also increase.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the reason why <strong>L plates<\/strong> are also available, having a more acute angle in the herringbone design of the corrugation. This goes with less contact points in the plates overlap, <strong>reduced pressure drop<\/strong> and also a lower efficiency in thermal exchange.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Xd5SnZthm6E?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>L plates<\/strong> are suitable for heat transfer applications using <strong>viscous fluids<\/strong>, not requiring very high thermal exchange rates.<br \/>\n<strong>H plates<\/strong> are suitable to obtain <strong>high thermal exchange efficiency<\/strong> with high pressure drop allowed, thus having pressure of a recirculation pump.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to choose H or L plates<\/strong> in a heat exchanger? The selection is easily done by introducing the design values in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tempco.it\/blog\/en\/3402\/heat-exchanger-calculation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>software to calculate a heat exchanger<\/strong><\/a>, values such as maximum pressure drop allowed, kind of fluids involved and their inlet\/outlet temperatures.
