The innovation arrives from a study of the <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/pdf\/10.1002\/aenm.201703401\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">Chalmers University of Technology<\/a> in G\u00f6teborg, Sweden, dedicated to a new <strong>solar thermal fuel<\/strong> mostly composed by carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen molecules.<\/p>\n<p>The Norbornadiene solar thermal fuel is indeed able to <strong>capture solar radiation<\/strong>, and to storage solar energy at low cost for years, without discharging in opposition to what happens with traditional batteries. The stored energy can be <strong>released on demand in form of heat<\/strong>, by activating the fluid through a catalyst.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tempco.it\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Norbornadiene-stoccaggio-solare-termico.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6595\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tempco.it\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Norbornadiene-stoccaggio-solare-termico-1024x755.jpg\" alt=\"Norbornadiene stoccaggio solare termico\" width=\"513\" height=\"378\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tempco.it\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Norbornadiene-stoccaggio-solare-termico-1024x755.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.tempco.it\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Norbornadiene-stoccaggio-solare-termico-300x221.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.tempco.it\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Norbornadiene-stoccaggio-solare-termico-768x566.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.tempco.it\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Norbornadiene-stoccaggio-solare-termico.jpg 1180w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 513px) 100vw, 513px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When <strong>hit by the sunlight<\/strong>, the molecules of Norbornadiene get excited so that some of the bonds between atoms are rearranged to a <strong>higher energy level structure<\/strong> (quadricyclane). The energized version of the molecule is stable, with strong chemical bonds, enabling the molecule to sit for nearly <strong>two decades without losing the stored energy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Passing through a catalyst, the chemical bonds are rearranged releasing quite a lot of heat.
