{"id":5055,"date":"2015-02-25T17:34:25","date_gmt":"2015-02-25T15:34:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tempco.it\/blog\/?p=5055"},"modified":"2023-03-17T11:07:48","modified_gmt":"2023-03-17T10:07:48","slug":"graphene-plastic-heat-exchangers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tempco.it\/blog\/en\/5055\/graphene-plastic-heat-exchangers\/","title":{"rendered":"Graphene plastic heat exchangers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.tempco.it\/solutions\/heat-exchangers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Heat exchangers<\/a> in the future are going to be less expensive, reaching thermal transfer efficiency higher than we can imagine today, due to\u2026 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.polimerica.it\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=article&amp;id=10356:scambiatori-di-calore-in-composito&amp;catid=10:universit%C3%A0%20e%20ricerca&amp;Itemid=71\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">plastic heat exchangers<\/a>!<br \/>\nIt sounds incredible, but it can soon be achieved thanks to the work of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.polimerica.it\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=article&amp;id=14305:conduttivi-col-grafene&amp;catid=10:universit%C3%A0%20e%20ricerca&amp;Itemid=71\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alberto Fina<\/a>, researcher at the <strong>Turin Politecnico<\/strong>, who is studying <strong>conductive polymeric nanocomposites<\/strong> enhanced with <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Graphene\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">graphene<\/a>: a such important research project that recently gained founds from the <strong>Erc<\/strong> &#8211; European Research Council, created by the European Commission supporting excellence in research and innovation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tempco.it\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Tempco-Fina1.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5049\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tempco.it\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Tempco-Fina1-252x300.png\" alt=\"Tempco Fina\" width=\"252\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tempco.it\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Tempco-Fina1-252x300.png 252w, https:\/\/www.tempco.it\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Tempco-Fina1.png 477w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 252px) 100vw, 252px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The project is called <strong>Intherm<\/strong> &#8211; Design, manufacturing and control of interfaces in thermally conductive polymer nanocomposites -, aiming to realize high thermal conductive polymers that could open new perspectives in the world of thermal machines and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.tempco.it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">thermal energy management<\/a> applications, in cooling and <strong>HVAC<\/strong> and <strong>heat recovery<\/strong>, also from low temperature waste heat flows, bringing the advantages of heat recovery and energy saving applications in a whole new range of industrial processes. These innovative plastic materials will enable to design new compact heat exchangers with costs lower than 50%, replacing traditional metals employed for thermal transfer surfaces, such as stainless steel and CU-alloys.<\/p>\n<p>Also, thermal conductive nanocomposites offer the great advantage of maximum <strong>design flexibility<\/strong>, in addition to high processability of polymeric materials, allowing the manufacturing of special shape heat exchangers otherwise difficult to construct using traditional metals, also offering high toughness and extreme corrosion resistance.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tempco.it\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Tempco-PHE.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5050\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tempco.it\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Tempco-PHE-300x229.png\" alt=\"Tempco PHE\" width=\"300\" height=\"229\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tempco.it\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Tempco-PHE-300x229.png 300w, https:\/\/www.tempco.it\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Tempco-PHE.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Plastic heat exchangers<\/strong> are already in the phase of application study in several research project in Eu, such as the Thermonano project headed by prof. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alessandrianews.it\/economia\/prestigioso-riconoscimento-dell-unione-europea-ricercatore-alberto-fina-75568_p.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">Guido Saracco<\/a>, director of the Department of Applied Sciences and Technology in Alessandria branch on the <strong>Politecnico<\/strong>, thanks to synergies with the local factory <strong>Astra Refrigeranti<\/strong>, co-working since 2010 to realize polymeric heat exchangers.<\/p>\n<p>Yet another application project based upon Fina studies on thermal conductive nanocomposite polymers is <a href=\"https:\/\/cordis.europa.eu\/article\/id\/190892-efficient-air-conditioning\/it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NanoCool<\/a>, a project intended to realize high <strong>energy efficiency conditioning systems<\/strong> employing hybrid liquid desiccants (HDL), taking at the same time advantage of the evaporation heat of the cooling systems and the condensation heat of the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.tempco.it\/solutions\/chillers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chiller<\/a>, using the waste heat coming from the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.tempco.it\/solutions\/cooling-towers\/condensatori-evaporativi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">condenser<\/a> for the production and regeneration of liquid desiccants, a kind of fluids highly corrosive for traditional metals. Thanks to plastic heat exchangers offering <strong>high corrosion resistance<\/strong>, these kind of systems using liquid desiccants could be employed and spread onto the market, offering <strong>energy saving levels up to 65-70%<\/strong>, in applications for environments with high humidity.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tempco.it\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/scambiatore-di-calore-a-piastre.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5051\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tempco.it\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/scambiatore-di-calore-a-piastre-179x300.jpg\" alt=\"scambiatore di calore a piastre\" width=\"179\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tempco.it\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/scambiatore-di-calore-a-piastre-179x300.jpg 179w, https:\/\/www.tempco.it\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/scambiatore-di-calore-a-piastre-611x1024.jpg 611w, https:\/\/www.tempco.it\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/scambiatore-di-calore-a-piastre.jpg 669w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 179px) 100vw, 179px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Just to give a few more details, the <strong>Intherm<\/strong> project consists in the engineering of a special interface among graphene <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tempco.it\/blog\/en\/4558\/magnetic-nanoparticles-could-aid-heat-dissipation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nanoparticles<\/a>, with a peculiar disposition of nanoparticles in the insulating polymeric matrix, a percolant tridimensional network of highly conductive particles able to ensure an efficient conductivity.
